Sunday Junk Street

DSCF1500Every sunday morning along the Horley Street of Ipoh,  many booths and stalls of different shapes and sizes began setting up to display a special kind of something. Like many Sundays before this, starting as early as 7 in the morning, people from all walks of life began to flock the famous Pasar Karat Loken of Ipoh, Perak.

DSCF1802Pasar Karat literally means Rusty Market, and like its name the vendors of Pasar Karat Loken has quite a rusty collection.

Before this market was relocated to its current location at Horley Street,  it was originally located at Lam Loo King Street, where the locals calls it Pasar Loken for short… and that’s how Pasar Karat Loken got its name.

DSCF1933The concept of Pasar Karat is a place where you can look for old, antique, outdated and sometimes rare and hard to find items. The place does give us the feeling of ‘One man’s junk is another man’s treasure’.

DSCF1928DSCF1924Browsing along the market does brings us down memory lane. There are many items from the 70s, 80s and 90s could be seen. From old radios and televisions to rusty milk tins and bottle caps, you would be surprise what might be around.

DSCF1871DSCF1880Pasar Karat Loken is also the hunting ground for avid coin collectors. We could see many coins or currency enthusiast looking around for rare coins that might have been overlooked by others.

DSCF1684DSCF1682DSCF1662DSCF1732DSCF1724DSCF1728DSCF1661To look for treasures in a sea of junk requires patience. Personally, at one glance all we could see are useless outdated items that my mum throws out every time she spring cleans our house…. BUT…. if you take your time and slowly scan through the many many items laid out on the mat of each booth…you might find the treasure you are looking for.

We wouldn’t want to leave Pasar Karat Loken empty handed and after much searching we found something we could bring back to Happy Campers base camp.

Happy hunting…
